Abstract
Though conflict is to be expected in most romantic relationships, researchdetermines the amount of conflict within a relationship is likely to peak in the dissolution
phase. Ending relationships is rarely easy, and the experience can be wrought with mixed
emotions and uncertainty. Problematic integration theory offers a perspective that
specifically deals with uncertainty and ambivalence but has yet to be applied to romantic
conflict. This thesis examines uncertainty in conflict within the dissolution phase of
romantic relationships. This perspective offers a more holistic view of how couples
negotiate uncertainty in dissolving conflicts.
