Eastern Illinois University has developed an academic assistance resource center for low achieving students k:no-wn as the Student Success Center (SSC). A major service of the SSC is EIU 2919, Strategies for Academic Success, a mandatory course for students who have fallen below a 2.00 cumulative GP A that focuses on removing barriers to success. In the first year of the Center's operation, the percentage of students on academic probation who regained good standing increased from 34% following the 2006- 2007 academic year to 70% following the 2007-2008 academic year. The purpose of the present study was to define what course content within EIU 2919 students described as beneficial to their success, and what effect the course had on levels of self-reported student engagement in the college experience.
