"Remodeling" the Hadwiger Communication Laboratory: The lab manager manual and lab assistant training program

Abstract

The Hadwiger Communication Laboratory is an important space within the Department of Communication Studies at Eastern Illinois University. Over the years, the lab manager manual and lab assistant training program have been "lost in translation" which ultimately affects the lab manager's ability to work effectively and the Hadwiger Communication Laboratory itself. A needs analysis, combining reflections from my personal experience in the lab, led me to create a new lab assistant training program and lab manager manual. Consistent with social construction theory, organizational culture and organizational assimilation, this program introduces a new lab manager manual and training program that not only benefits the needs of the lab manager, lab assistants and assistant lab managers, but also benefits the Hadwiger Communication Laboratory as a whole.
