Abstract

Educators in the area of computer networking face the challenge of developing
successful academic courses that can increase students' comprehension and interest while
improving their competitiveness in the job market. This situation requires the
development of a curriculum with emphasis on current industry needs and practical
activities that can provide students with hands-on experience. This study focuses on the
development oflaboratory practices in three areas of significant importance for the
industry: network security, wireless networks and voice over IP. The objectives of the
laboratory practices are to improve the use of equipment in the telecommunication
laboratory at Eastern Illinois University, to provide additional theoretical background for
the students, to provide easy to understand procedures and to present scenarios that
closely resemble real life situations. These practices might be added to the current
curriculum in computer networking or used as a basis for the development of a new and
more comprehensive curriculum.
