Abstract
Private universities have long been a central element of higher educational systems in various regions and
countries in the world. The phenomenon is, however, a recent development in Sub-Saharan Africa where it only
emerged in the 1990s following the implementation of neo-liberal policies after the economic crisis of the 1980s,
which led to major reductions in funding for public universities. The purpose of this study was to investigate private
universities in Uganda.
