About

Dr. Smith’s general research interest is in cultural and institutional change, with a focus on the role of discourse and meaning in change processes. With specializations in organization studies and military sociology, his research has explored how military organizations manage change efforts and affect broader institutional change. With an interest in race and ethnic relations, his recent research has explored the cultural constraints faced by racially focused social movements; the social and political consequences of the prevailing discourse on racism that defines it narrowly as personal prejudice; and the political implications of teaching college students to recognize racism in its various forms.
